Dragon Fruit Cuttings, Is that a Flower bud?

Here are my dragon fruit plants that I grew from cuttings last year. I posted previously on these plants, White, Red, and Purple. These pictures were taken today, I had a very pleasant surprise, see last picture. I'm not sure if it's a flower bud, I've never grown dragon fruit before. But it looks different from the other new growths.

Is that what I think it is?

  2. this is my first year growing these so I'm not sure how well they'd do in the winter. But during the summer they seem almost indestructible.

  3. You have to put them inside in dallas winter. I have many DF trees and they are getting big. Let me know if you need any tips. Texasguava.com

  5. thanks texasguava. Nice website. Do you grow your guavas all in greenhouses? I guess I'm hoping there is a hardier type that I can plant in the ground. I also grow passionfruit "incarnata". They are pretty hardy.

    thanks for visiting my blog!

  6. oh, and that new growth was not a flowerbud after all. It sure tricked me. It was probably a flowerbud that realized it didn't quite have enough energy and became vegetative growth instead.

  7. The flower buds don't form on the tip, but rather on the sides. That is a new segment forming, mine does that all the time.

  8. good observation! you're right I've only seen them form on the sides.

  9. I am always trying to stand these guys up. Today, I saw your plant and had an ah ha moment. Usually, it is put on a T bar! So it would be okay to have it going side ways, duh.
And yes, it is a bud, I have a much bigger one and was searching to see it is a fruit or not, so that is how I landed here. Will post it this week, come by and see it when you have time. :-)
